2 hour boat ride east on lake Mälaren.





Björkö (Birka) island, with the Ansgar monument.

Birka was an important trading village during the viking age.



The water level was 6 meters higher back then.

Birka was inhabited between around 700-900 AD and may have been destroyed in a great fire.

Each little hill is a viking grave.

There are around 3000 graves on the island.

Around this cliff was a wall and a stone rampart, making it into a defensive fort.
